New Releases
Gorillaz release their new album Cracker Island this Friday 24th Feb.
'An energetic, upbeat, genre-expansive collection of 10 tracks featuring yet another stellar line-up of artist collaborators: Thundercat, Tame Impala, Bad Bunny, Stevie Nicks, Adeleye Omotayo, Bootie Brown and Beck.'
Limited edition purple vinyl, black vinyl and CD versions available.
Motorhead, 'the iconic Godfathers of heavy metal, released their 23rd (and final) studio album Bad Magic in 2015. Instantly hailed as one of the best the beloved trio had recorded in many years, Bad Magic: Seriously Bad Magic, released this week, enjoys a bonus-packed refresh, adding two previously unreleased tracks from those furious sessions: “Bullet in Your Brain” and “Greedy Bastards” as well as a snarling, fangs-out live performance from that subsequent tour at the giant Fuji Rock Festival in Japan in 2015.'
2CD and 2LP versions available now
This week sees the release of David Bowie's A Divine Symmetry, an alternative version of the Hunky Dory album, on black vinyl.
'1971 was a pivotal year for Bowie. He signed a record deal with RCA, he met Andy Warhol, Lou Reed, and Iggy Pop while in New York, became a father and penned the song Kooks as a show of paternal pride, played live for the first time that June with Mick Ronson, Woody Woodmansey and Trevor Bolder, the band that would later be christened the Spiders From Mars and recorded the
classic album Hunky Dory.'
Experimental post punk band Shame follow their last album Drunk Tank Pink with new release Food For Worms which frontman Charlie Steen declares to be “the Lamborghini of shame records."
CD and Indie exclusive on blue and yellow split vinyl with limited edition 7"
Also out this week is a 60th anniversary deluxe edition of Booker T. & The M.G.s' Green Onions on green vinyl.
'One of the most popular instrumental songs ever, “Green Onions” started out as a band jam at a demo recording session for rock’n’roll singer Billy Lee Riley with the famed Stax Records house band. Stax label head Jim Stewart liked what he heard and recorded what would become the basis for the band’s debut album. Christened Booker T. and The M.G.s, they released “Green Onions” with original members Booker T. Jones (organ, piano), Steve Cropper (guitar), Lewie Steinberg (bass), and Al Jackson Jr. (drums) in October 1962. The title track became a worldwide hit, covered by dozens of artists including the Blues Brothers, the Ventures, the Shadows, Deep Purple, Mongo Santamaria and Count Basie.'
Jeff Beck Group - In Concert For The BBC 1972 'arrived back from the pressing plant the day after the sad news of Jeff Beck’s death was announced...presented now as a tribute to an influential and well-respected musician. The Jeff Beck Group that recorded these eight tracks in the BBC Paris Studio in June 1972 was a jazzier, more instrumental group than in its previous incarnation.'
Nu-Clear Sounds is the second album by Ash, originally released on 5 October 1998. Standout tracks include the slouch cool of Jesus Says and the Sonic Youth-like burr of Death Trip 21.
Reissued on green clear splatter vinyl.
'Presented here on limited edition gold vinyl, Ogden's Nut Gone Flake is the third studio album, and only concept album by the Small Faces. Originally released in May 1968 - reissued on 180gm gold vinyl.
'Tricky is back. Back with a new studio album, False Idols, and his own label (also bearing the False Idols name). There is no doubt that False Idols stands as his most accomplished album since his earliest works. It opens with a cover of a Van Morrison song, 'Somebody's Sins,' which sees Tricky and vocalist Fran Belmonte whispering "Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine" over a sparse groaning bass.'
American singer-songwriter and multi instrumentalist Bill Callahan releases double album YTI⅃AƎЯ.
'The 19th album by Bill Callahan – or the 23rd if you count the lo-fi cassette-only releases he put out in the days when he called himself Smog – comes with an accompanying statement. In it, the 56-year-old singer-songwriter addresses his post-pandemic audience: people who, as Reality’s opening track beautifully puts it, are “coming out of dreams … coming back to dreams”. “It felt like it was necessary to rouse people,” offers Callahan of the motivation behind Reality’s 12 songs. “Rouse their love, their kindness … it just takes a little nudge to get your head back on track. I wanted sounds and words that made you feel and lifted you up … I went for horns, because horns are heralds, triumphs … I wanted multiple voices.” The Guardian
Out Friday is a remastered black vinyl version of Owen Pallett's He Poos Clouds, originally released by Pallett's Final Fantasy.
'Legendary electronic music duo Orbital return with new album Optical Delusion, the Hartnoll brothers first studio album since 2018’s Monster’s Exist. Recorded in Orbital’s Brighton studio, Optical Delusion includes contributions from Sleaford Mods, Penelope Isles, Anna B Savage, The Little Pest, Dina Ipavic, Coppe, and perhaps most surprisingly, The Medieval Baebes.
New in is Nick Cave and Warren Ellis' soundtrack to the Netflix film Blonde. 'Blonde boldly reimagines the life of one of Hollywood's most enduring icons, Marilyn Monroe. From her volatile childhood as Norma Jeane, through her rise to stardom and romantic entanglements, Blonde blurs the lines of fact and fiction to explore the widening split between her public and private selves.'
The film itself has been controversial but Cave and Ellis' score has been highly praised as, 'beautifully delivered and successful in its own right' The Student
We have the deluxe red vinyl version with insert.
Ty Segall & Emmett Kelly's live recording of a spontaneous gig at a Highland Park clothing boutique in July 2022.
Live at Worship is a new 12" on black vinyl
'Following on from his top 10 album Seeking New Gods Gruff Rhys releases the soundtrack to the film The Almond And The Seahorse via Rough Trade Records. The soundtrack is released as a foil numbered, limited edition double-LP, on yellow vinyl with a fold out film poster.'
'When Philip Selway (Radiohead) approached some of his favourite musicians to play on his third solo record he said he imagined it as a Carole King record if she collaborated with the pioneering electronic composer Daphne Oram and invited him to drum on it. Unsurprisingly they were all sold, and so began the bringing together of an extraordinary number of gifted people, including Hannah Peel, Adrian Utley, Quinta, Marta Salogni, Valentina Magaletti and Laura Moody.'
