Autumn 20204 has got off to a good start! Here's a round up of some of the great new releases out so far in September...
'The The’s first studio album of new songs in a quarter century! The 12 songs on Ensoulment encompasses characteristic topics ranging from love and sex, war and politics, life &and death – to the meaning of what it is to be human in the 21st century.'
The brand-new album by David Gilmour, Luck and Strange was recorded over five months in Brighton and London and is Gilmour’s first album of new material in nine years. The record was produced by David and Charlie Andrew, best known for his work with ALT-J and Marika Hackman, with lyrics mostly written by Polly Samson, Gilmour’s co-writer for the past thirty years. The album features eight new tracks along with a beautiful reworking of The Montgolfier Brothers’ ‘Between Two Points’, which sees Romany Gilmour, who performs backing vocals across the album, on vocals and harp. Musicians contributing to the record include Guy Pratt and Tom Herbert on bass, Adam Betts, Steve Gadd and Steve DiStanislao on drums, Rob Gentry and Roger Eno on keyboards and the string and choral arrangements are by Will Gardner. The title track also features the late Pink Floyd keyboard player Richard Wright, recorded in 2007 during a ‘Barn Jam’ at David’s house. The album’s cover image, photographed and designed by renowned artist Anton Corbijn, is inspired by lyrics written by Charlie Gilmour for the album’s final song ‘Scattered’

'Jack White's back in a big, big way! Here he slides back into the raw, blown out garage rock that he's so well known for and man does it sound good. The riffs are piled high all over this album and he's never sounded so urgent and utterly relevant. Everything distorts in just the right places and the hooks are guaranteed to stay in your head for a long, long time. He's stripped everything back and come back bigger, badder and better than ever. 2024 needs this man big time.'
New York instrumental outfit lead by multi-instrumentalist / producer Leon Michels, El Michels Affair are a shop favourite. The Instrumental version of the underground classic El Michels Affair and Black Thought collaborative album Glorious Game is out this week - blood smoke vinyl

It features her hit songs “OMG”, “To Love”, “My Fun”, plus 15 brand new songs.

'Three Quarter Skies – the new band formed by Simon Scott from Slowdive – release their debut album Fade In. It was recorded by Simon and mixed with the help of elusive Flying Saucer Attack mainman Dave Pearce. The eight-track album includes the singles ‘Crows’ and ‘Leave A Light On’, a Nick Drake cover and brand new versions of ‘Holy Water’ and ‘Pieces Of Roslin’, which was originally released on last year’s introductory EP, Universal Flames.'
'American indie-pop luminary Clairo returns with third album, Charm, co-produced by Clairo and Leon Michels (of The Dap-Kings and El Michels Affair). Evoking balmy summer evenings and tête-à-têtes in plush conversation pits, Charm is a collection of warm, 70’s-inspired grooves that move lithely between jazz, psychedelic folk and soul.'
To celebrate 40 years since the release of their very first recording, Soft Cell release their debut EP Mutant Moments.

'Bored At My Grandma's House is the brainchild of 22 year old songwriter and musician Amber Strawbridge - originally from Cumbria but now based in Leeds. Amber began recording music in 2017 originally using garage band on her phone then progressing her bedroom set up after saving up to buy a laptop and Logic Pro. After a couple of years of self taught production and recording Amber began working with Clue Records, releasing her debut EP 'Sometimes I Forget You're Human Too' which gained critical acclaim and sold out two pressings all before Amber had ever played a single gig.'
We have Irish singer/songwriter Dermot Kennedy's latest 12" I've Told The Trees Everything in stock now
'From Dermot… “It’s not enough just to have the songs, it has to be a world that you create. I'm trying to make music with imagery that takes people somewhere, that makes people feel something, so everything has to be consistent with that. The artwork for this new music is just that – it’s somewhere I’d like to be. It’s a scene that I wish I could see and feel and smell. It’s this isolation; musically, thematically, it’s everything I need at the moment. For that reason, I'm so excited to have worked with Nicholas Moegly on this new artwork, and I can't wait to share this EP with you."
The Blossoms release 5th album Gary on Friday 20th September, 'named after a 8 foot fibre glass gorilla was stolen from a Lanarkshire Garden Centre in early 2023, and since then there has been a campaign to locate him, his rear end was recently found, but his frontage is still missing! Cameo from Everton Football Manager Sean Dyche'
We have the pink double vinyl 1 year anniversary edition of Chappell Roan's The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess in stock now
Thurston Moore returns with his ninth and best solo album Flow Critical Lucidity released via Daydream Library Series. Some of the songs were written and arranged in Europe and the United Kingdom and include lyrical references to their environments and inspired by nature, lucid dreaming, modern dance and Isadora Duncan. The album was arranged at La Becque in Switzerland and recorded at Total Refreshment Studios in London in 2022, and mixed at Hermitage Studios in London with Margo Broom in 2023.
Tindersticks' 14th album Soft Tissue 'showcases their exploratory spirit, mixing intimate songwriting with experimental soundscapes. The album evolves from their previous work, balancing introspective lyrics with innovative musical textures. Band members, including singer Stuart Staples, emphasize the collaborative nature of the creation process, fostering a dynamic dialogue that shapes their music. Key tracks like "New World" and "Always a Stranger" highlight this blend of personal reflection and sonic exploration, underscoring the band's enduring ambition and versatility.'

From the new wave of the late Seventies led by The Clash and Siouxsie and The Banshees; the ska vibe of London’s Madness along with the Manchester sounds of Joy Division, New Order and The Smiths and the Midlands multiculturalism of UB40 and The Selecter in the Eighties; the heavy metal of Iron Maiden and Def Leppard; the worldwide pop invasion of the Spice Girls and Take That; the Britpop era spearheaded by Oasis and Blur; the raucous sounds of Noughties indie headlined by bands like Arctic Monkeys and Foals, to defiant all-women groups like Sugababes, R&B act FLO, rock duo Nova Twins and breakthrough sensations including Wet Leg and BRITs Rising Stars of 2024 The Last Dinner Party – the rollcall of diverse and exciting talent drawn from different genres is endless.'
