NEW IN THIS WEEK
London experimental rock band Black Midi release new album Hellfire this week.
'Black Midi are one of the bands that will continue to invigorate with something new and unheard with every outing. Though many of the band's distinct hallmarks show face – heavier than ever, even – somehow their latest record sounds miraculously and hideously new, proving their aversion to any mindless repetition.' 9/10 The Line Of Best Fit
Clear Red vinyl and CD versions available
Slipknot reissue their classic 2004 album Volume 3: The Subliminal Verses. Produced by Rick Rubin, the album features three huge top 40 UK singles in Duality, Before I Forget and Vermillion. Limited edition violet double vinyl.
90s formed New York band Interpol release The Other Side Of Make-Believe
“The nobility of the human spirit is to recover and rebound,” says lead guitarist Paul Banks “Yeah, I could focus on how f****d everything is, but I feel now is the time when being hopeful is necessary, and a still-believable emotion within what makes Interpol Interpol.”
The Libertines - What A Waster 7" single
'To celebrate its 20th birthday, The Libertines’ debut single ‘What A Waster’ is being repressed on seven- inch single (backed by original B-side ‘I Get Along’)...What A Waster’ wasn’t a song to help you get your bearing with a new band, it was a track that made you realise this group would become your whole world.'
Working Mens Club release Fear Fear Fri 15th July.
'Their critically acclaimed self-titled debut album, released in summer 2020, was the sound of singer and songwriter Syd Minsky-Sargeant processing a teenage life in Todmorden in the Upper Calder Valley. He was 16 when he wrote some of those songs, now 20, he had to get up and out of the Valley. “The first album was mostly a personal documentation lyrically, this is a blur between personal and a third-person perspective of what was going on.” Fear Fear documents the last two years. Yes, there is bleakness – but there is also hope and empathy. “I like the contrast of it being happy, uplifting music and really dark lyrics. It’s not a minimal record, certainly compared to the first one. That’s because there’s been a lot more going on that needed to be said.”
Crystal clear vinyl with poster, CD or cassette versions are available now.
A late RSD22 June Drop arrival is Brian Tyler's original soundtrack to The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift. The soundtrack features Slash on the track Welcome To Tokyo. This is a first time release on vinyl, this is a double orange and black vinyl edition with an etched D side featuring a stencil of the scarab beetle design that appears on the car belonging to the Drift King. Limited to 400 copies.
'Jane Campion’s masterful The Power of the Dog is the most honoured film of the year. The critically-acclaimed original score by Academy Award and BAFTA-nominated composer Jonny Greenwood has won ‘Best Score’ at 13 major critics organisations and is now SCL nominated for Outstanding Original Score for a Studio Film.'
The Power of the Dog soundtrack is in stock on CD.
Angel Olsen - Big Time - American folk/indie rock
'Haunting, heartbreaking and life-affirming, Angel Olsen’s songwriting talents soar to great heights in the mostly restrained palette here, offering the much needed space to wrestle with the complexities life has thrown at her.'
CD, Cassette all available.
Welcome 2 Club XIII, Drive By Trucker’s 14th studio album, marks a sharp departure from the trenchant political commentary of their last three records. A reckoning with the dualities of the things that make you alive and how they sometimes can kill you. A life affirming flashlight for the dark nights of one’s soul. The title track is a tongue in cheek homage to a local dive that founding members Cooley and Hood played in the early days. As they say in the song “Our glory days did kinda suck”. CD in stock.
British Soul singer Liam Bailey teamed up with NY funk/soul band El Michels Affair on Ekundayo Inversions with guest appearances from Lee Scratch Perry and Black Thought.
Limited edition translucent red vinyl available now.
'Pop music agitator Dorian Electra (pronouns: they/them/theirs) makes music that is unbound by gender or genre. Since the 2019 release of their acclaimed debut album Flamboyant, which Interview Magazine called a “pop magnum opus,” Electra has gained an intense cult following around the globe, that has been fuelled by considerable critical support from places like Pitchfork, Billboard, Paper Magazine, Fader, Gay Times, The Guardian and more.'
Deluxe white/blue vinyl edition
Nightlands is the solo project of The War on Drugs’ bassist and multi-instrumentalist Dave Hartley. The album Moonshine is out this week, 'relentless musicality, production wizardry and really good songs' All Music Guide

It won't come as a shock to know that we are unashamedly old-school in our household (after all we do run a record shop!) For example, a very kind mate just sourced and gifted us a new car stereo which not only plays CDs but also tapes, get in! Consequently we've been digging out old favourites including an album from our student days, English and French by Hopper which our teenage daughter has subsequently got into. So much so that we googled the band members to see where they are now only to find out that sadly Hopper's amazing frontwoman Rachel Ratajski (Morris) died in February this year.
Hopper were formed in 1992 and after initially signing to Damaged Goods later signed to Tony Wilson's Factory Too label. Their debut album English and French (1996) was produced by Bernard Butler after his departure from Suede and engineered by Nigel Godrich just after he worked on Radiohead's The Bends.
Through the wonder of the internet we came across a blog post about this very subject by James McMahon entitled, 'I wish people I like would stop dying' which features Hopper's John Peel Session, a recent interview with Rachel (who also put out music under the name of Rachel Kyriaki) and a link to her solo stuff which is also great.
