New Arrivals...

Introducing Jockstrap, aka Georgia Ellery and Taylor Skye, a great London based duo who release their debut album I Love You Jennifer B this week. 'Ellery and Skye formed the group in 2018 after meeting when they were both students at London’s Guildhall School of Music & Drama. Ellery, also a member of Black Country, New Road, has been playing violin since the age of five, while Skye — who studied electronic music — does his work mainly while hunched over a computer.

As part of their seemingly traditional musical education, they formed Jockstrap, a project in which Skye takes Ellery’s often simple, sweeping songs and puts them through a future-pop blender, with hard-left turns at every juncture. Some of their music feels fit for concert halls, while other tracks belong in the heat of a messy rave. In another curveball — standard practice for the duo — they were originally signed to legendary electronic label Warp for a series of early EPs, but upcoming debut album I Love You Jennifer B will come out via indie stalwarts Rough Trade.' 'Ozzy Osbourne releases his new album, titled Patient Number 9. The album includes standout track Patient Number 9 featuring guitar work by fellow rock legend Jeff Beck.

Along with Beck, the epic seven-minute song boasts an all-star cast of musicians that includes Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith on drums, Metallica’s Robert Trujillo on bass, Zakk Wylde on guitars and keyboards, and producer Andrew Watt on backing vocals, guitars, and keyboards.'

Double gold vinyl version available now.

Natural Brown Prom Queen is Sudan Archives’ second album following her widely celebrated 2019 debut Athena. Over its 18 epic and ambitious tracks, Natural Brown Prom Queen shows a new side to Sudan Archives: Brittney Parks or Britt, the girl-next-door. On this album, Sudan explores themes of race, womanhood and family. We have the Limited Orange LP in stock.

Australian indie singer songwriter Stella Donnelly releases her second album Flood on Fri 9th September - opaque red vinyl or CD available.

Hideous Bastard is the debut solo album from Oliver Sim - vocalist and bassist of The xx. The album 'is a deeply self-confessional journey of fear and shame inspired by the queer horror films he loves. Oliver is joined on the record by Jamie xx and Jimmy Somerville (Bronski Beat/Communards).'

NOW Yearbook 79  - 48 tracks on triple orange vinyl from the likes of The Clash, Kate Bush, Chic, Roxy Music and The Specials. A CD version is also available.

This year's Mercury Award winner will be announced tonight 8th September from a shortlist of Fergus McCreadie, Harry Styles, Jessie Buckley & Bernard Butler, Joy Crookes, Kojey Radical, Little Simz, Nova Twins, Sam Fender, Self Esteem, Wet Leg and Yard Act.

'The judges said 'Getting down to 12 albums this year was not easy, simply because there were so many remarkable ones to choose from. That serves as proof that British & Irish music thrives during unsettled periods in history, with the albums chosen covering everything from imaginative pop to pioneering rap to Cornish language folk-rock. We feel that these 12 amazing albums each have something to say artistically and socially, all in their own unique, enriching ways. Now comes the really hard part... choosing only one overall winner’.

BBC Music, will be providing coverage of the event across BBC TV, BBC Radio 6 Music, online & social media.

'Ten years ago in 2012, Robert Glasper changed the game. After several acclaimed Blue Note albums that solidified his Jazz cred while hinting at his Hip-Hop leanings, the visionary pianist went all in with Black Radio, an album that would go on to debut on four different Billboard charts peaking at #1 Jazz, #4 R&B/Hip-Hop, and even reaching #15 on the Top 200. The cherry on top came in February 2013 at the 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards when Black Radio was awarded Best R&B Album.

Now, a special 10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition presents the full Black Radio experience by expanding it to 3-LPs featuring the original album plus three bonus tracks previously unreleased on vinyl, and the remix EP Black Radio Recovered which featured additional contributions from Questlove, Solange, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Pete Rock, 9th Wonder, and more.'

What have we been listening to this week? Well, Mark is having a medieval music revival revisiting the likes of The York Waits who play traditional 16th century style ballads and discovering a tremendous debut album from Lincs artist Nicholas Konradsen, more about that next week.

And with the release of violinist, singer, songwriter and producer Sudan Archive's second album Natural Brown Prom Queen this week Lee has been checking out this and her back catalogue - funky, electronic and folky - highly recommended!
