American indie rock singer songwriter Blondshell (aka Sabrina Teitelbaum) releases their debut album this week

'Urgent, funny and fearless, the LA artist's debut album sees her imbue her rage with wit and fierce ambition' NME

'A Wednesday song is a quilt. A short story collection, a half-memory, a patchwork of portraits of the American south, disparate moments that somehow make sense as a whole. Karly Hartzman, the songwriter / vocalist / guitarist at the helm of the project, is a story collector as much as she is a storyteller: a scholar of people and one-liners. New album Rat Saw God, the Asheville quintet’s new and best record, is ekphrastic but autobiographical and above all, deeply empathetic. Across the album’s ten tracks Hartzman, guitarist MJ Lenderman, bassist Margo Shultz, drummer Alan Miller, and lap/pedal steel player Xandy Chelmis build a shrine to minutiae. Half-funny, half-tragic dispatches from North Carolina unfurling somewhere between the wailing skuzz of Nineties shoegaze and classic country twang, that distorted lap steel and Hartzman’s voice slicing through the din.'

Clear sunspot vinyl and purple cassette available

Also in stock Wednesday's albums I Was Trying To Describe You To Someone and Twin Plagues

Following their 2022 sophomore album ‘Fear Fear’, Working Men’s Club drop ‘Steel City EP’, a five-track remix collection of some of its songs. Previously available as a CD giveaway that came only with purchases at a Sheffield record shop, it contains excellent reworkings by other artists from the city, including Toddla TCharla GreenDiessaWarp signees Forgemasters and the album’s producer Ross Orton.

'The absurdities of modern life have always been prime subject matter for Seattle-based foursome Mudhoney, and the band take aim at all of them with typical barbed humor and muck-encrusted riffs on on 11th studio album, Plastic Eternity, which was recorded over nine days at Crackle and Pop! in Seattle with longtime producer Johnny Sangster.'

Silver vinyl

Mazzy Star - Ghost Highway, 'The Winter of '94 and a year after the release of the sublime So Tonight That I Might See, Mazzy Star find themselves still touring and promoting the album, some of the songs featured here are from that album such as "Into Dust", "Bells Ring" the title track and the hit single "Fade Into You". Whilst songs like "Flowers In December" would turn up on the next album released a whole two years later.

Four of the selections are from the critically acclaimed first album She Hangs Brightly issued in 1990, including the Sylvia Gomez penned "Give You My Lovin" and the obscure German band Slapp Happy cover of "Blue Flower".

Thee Headcoats - Irregulars (The Great Hiatus)

'Heralded as one of the finest folk musicians and singers England has ever produced. Nic Jones's lyrical style of singing and his percussive and finger style rhythmic guitar and fiddle playing have been widely imitated throughout the years but never equalled. Nic has also appeared as a guest musician on albums by the leading lights of English Folk, June Tabor, Shirley Collins, Richard Thompson and Barbara Dickson. Penguin Eggs is a wonderful album, originally released in 1980, and named Folk Album Of The Year by both Melody Maker and Folk Roots and voted in 2001 by BBC Folk Show Mike Harding listeners as the 2nd 'Best Folk Album Of All Time'. '

Fred again.. returns with the third in his series of Actual Life albums Actual Life 3 (January 1 - September 9 2022). the album includes lead single Danielle (smile on my face)’, which samples the acapella of 070 Shake’s ‘Nice To Have’ – his most listened to track this year.

3 Feet High and Rising is the debut studio album by American hip hop trio De La Soul. It was released on March 3, 1989, by Tommy Boy...New reissue out now.

Black Honey's third album and another immense statement. The first track from this 3.0 phase of the Honeys, sees the rip roaring "Charlie Bronson", a nod to "I Like The Way You Die" and this track is the killer opener to the third record A Fistful Of Peaches.

'London Brew is a reimagining of Miles Davis’ legendary album Bitches Brew. Produced by Martin Terefe and Downtown Music UK Limited, the record reflects an emotional journey of the times, having been recorded during the pandemic after many months of isolation and the inability to collaborate in person. Recorded in December 2020 at Church Studios in London, the recording session brings together UK jazz artists, Nubya Garcia, Shabaka Hutchings, Theon Cross, Dave Okumu, Benji B, Tom Skinner and more. Producer Martin Terefe describes, “Sometimes the music is uncomfortable, other times it's familiar and joyous and other times it's like deep meditation.”

Great news, This Is The Kit have announced the release of a new album, Careful Of Your Keepers is out 9th June.

'The album’s propulsive yet introspective lead single “Inside Outside” finds Stables as magnetic as ever, joined once again by her stalwart band of Rozi Plain(bass/vocals), Neil Smith (guitar), and Jamie Whitby-Coles (drums), and accented by a cascading horn quartet arrangement by Jesse Vernon...

“The album was nearly called Goodbye Bite. And in a way it still is,” says Stables. “I went for Careful of Your Keepers in the end. It’s one of my favourite songs on the album, a song that for me holds the general feeling of the album as a whole. The fragility of things. Of situations. Of relationships. Of humans. What we do to look after each other and ourselves. The passing of time and what that does to us, and how we live our lives going forward.”

Guiding the ship through changing seas is producer Gruff Rhys. Stables described his role as being a “tonesetter,” watchful and attentive to the band dynamics while making sure to always follow a hunch for where a new sound could find its place in the recording.

“I’ve always loved the idea of working with him somehow, and when this album started getting planned, I realized that maybe this was my chance to reach out and see if he was up for working together,” Stables explains. “And he was! As if that wasn’t enough, he was also up for doing a bit of singing on the record, which totally blew my mind and made my year. His way with harmony and melody and the tone and quality of his voice is a totally killer combo.”

It was very sad to hear of the death of the renowned composer Ryuichi Sakamoto. He was an actor as well as a musician and has an amazing body of work to explore but 'Soundtrack work became one of the main planks of Sakamoto’s career. He won an Academy Award (along with his fellow composers David Byrne and Cong Su) for his soundtrack to Bernardo Bertolucci's The Last Emperor (1987), in which he also had an acting role, and worked with the director again on The Sheltering Sky (1990) and Little Buddha (1993). Sakamoto scored the 1990 film version of The Handmaid’s Tale, Pedro Almodovar's Tacones Lejanos (High Heels, 1991), and Brian De Palma’s Snake Eyes (1998) and Femme Fatale (2002). Oliver Stone hired him for the soundtrack to his TV series Wild Palms (1993). Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu used some existing Sakamoto recordings in his 2006 film Babel, then recruited him to write the score for his multiple Oscar-winner The Revenant (2015).' The Guardian
