50th Anniversary Judas Priest, Bonnie Prince Billy, Larkin Poe, Madvillain, Big Thief's Capacity reissued

January 2025 is going out with a bang with more great releases this week...

Rocka Rolla, Judas Priest's debut, has been remixed and remastered for its 50th Anniversary to deliver the sound and power in the way the band had always intended it to be.

Blue vinyl or CD versions out 31st January

Larkin Poe's new album Bloom sees the dynamic sister duo venturing further along on their evolving musical journey with a collection of songs that resonate with introspection, authenticity, and a profound connection to their roots in American music.

Available on Ltd vinyl.

Big Thief's classic album Capacity is reissued by 4AD this week on eco coloured vinyl and CD.

'The trails that Brooklyn’s Big Thief - Adrianne Lenker (guitar, vocals), Buck Meek (guitar), Max Oleartchik (bass), and James Krivchenia (drums) - take us down on 2017’s Capacity, the band’s highly critically acclaimed sophomore album, are overgrown with the wilderness of pumping souls. After 2016’s stunning Masterpiece, Capacity was recorded in a snowy winter nest in upstate New York at Outlier Studio with producer Andrew Sarlo.

“There is a darker darkness and a lighter light on this album,” Lenker explains. “The songs search for a deeper level of self-acceptance, to embrace the world within and without. I think Masterpiece began that process, as a reaction from inside the pain, whereas I feel Capacity examines the pain from the outside.”

'The Purple Bird finds Bonnie "Prince" Billy working with a "producer" for only the second time in his illustrious catalogue. This time it's David "Ferg" Ferguson (Johnny Cash, Sturgill Simpson) who guides the songs backed by "the best band you can get in Nashville right now", country singer John Anderson and Bluegrass legend Tim O'Brien. The Purple Bird is simultaneously like and unlike other BPB records. Many of the songs are a product of multiple composers’ voices, making the shape-shifting aspect of the BPB persona more fluid than ever before.'

Purple vinyl available from 31st January

Madvillainy is the only studio album by American hip-hop duo Madvillain, consisting of British-American rapper MF Doom and American record producer Madlib and an anniversary edition is out Friday 31st January on vinyl as well as the demos version, also out on vinyl this week.

'In 2002, the first demo sequence of Madvillainy leaked online. The tracks contained early vocal cuts from MF Doom, recorded and quickly mixed in Los Angeles at Madlib's Bomb Shelter studio. The demos may have been unfinished, but fans understood that this was a hip-hop album unlike any other. Doom rerecorded vocals – alluding to the leak on “Rhinestone Cowboy” – and Madlib added new beats and changed up the sequence. Leaks could kill an album’s momentum in the early 2000s, but the demos only whetted fans' appetites; when Madvillainy came out in 2004 it was one of the most anticipated releases in underground rap history.

Madvillainy is now regarded as one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time.'

'Six years after their second album Kingdoms in Colour made them one of the hottest names in electronic music, Hertfordshire duo Maribou State return with their third full length album. Hallucinating Love is worth the wait: it’s ambitious, packed with sublime anthemia, and is injected with restless energy, soaring strings and stunning guest vocals from long-standing collaborator Holly Walker and new friends like Mobo-nominated artist Andreya Triana.'

Also new in store this week; Michael Head & The Strands - The Magical World Of The Strands, Benjamin Booker's Lower, Decius - Decius Vol II... and Julie Fowlis, Karine Polwart, Mary Chapin Carpenter collaboration album - Looking for the Thread has arrived on CD
