Adding to the array of excellent new music for Autumn 2024 super trio The Smile (Radiohead's Thom Yorke & Jonny Greenwood and Sons of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner) release their third studio album Cutouts this week. It features a number of songs that were debuted during their March tour and follows the release of Wall of Eyes earlier this year which received “Best Album of the Year so far” praise from Pitchfork, The Needle Drop, Consequence, Brooklyn Vegan, Treblezine and Spin.

Various formats available including white and standard vinyl and cassette

Also out this week is Canadian post-rock band Godspeed You! Black Emperor's latest release, NO TITLE AS OF 13 FEBRUARY 2024, 28,340 DEAD

'Not that we’d expect anything less, but GY!BE have unleashed yet another masterpiece of an album. I can’t pretend that it’s an album that everyone will love; it’s certainly strange, it’s certainly unconventional, and it’s (likely) not one to put on at a party where people want to dance the night away. No Title As Of 13 February 2024, 28340 Dead is an experience to savour when the mood is right. Its crushing heaviness, its weird beauty, and its inarguable power are all works of art to behold. Listen, appreciate, and enjoy.' The Razors Edge

This week The Hard Quartet release their eponymous debut album, on Matador Records.

The album is reviewed here by our roving reporter RCM

'Pavement's lead-singer Stephen Malkmus joins indie movers and/or shakers Matt Sweeney (Chavez), Emmett Kelly (Cairo Gang) and Jim White (Dirty Three) for an explosive, professional debut unafraid to go in weirder directions than most. Incredibly strong from start to finish, the album is an energetic unison of three distinct styles which bleed into each other due to constant instrument swapping; Sweeney, Kelly and Malkmus all play bass and solo on each other's songs. It's certainly a positive direction for Malkmus who oscillates between the vocal meanderings and blistering guitar he's long perfected, without succumbing to the polish or indulgence of his solo work. Sweeney's contributions add a disproportionate dose of emotional depth and delightful hookyness to the record, in a near-perfect set of four songs. It's safe to say this self-titled foray represents a step forward for all four musicians, and it's a sign of great things to come.'

Coke bottle clear vinyl and CD in stock now

Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works Volume II (Expanded Edition) celebrates the original album’s 30th anniversary. Written when Aphex Twin (Richard D. James) was in his early 20s, the album gained critical acclaim both upon release and retrospectively. Aphex Twin and Selected Ambient Works Volume II's influence continues to grow and take new meaning across generations.

Expanded edition includes all songs on all formats for the first time, including previously vinyl-exclusive track #19 alongside two additional tracks (officially released and on physical formats for the first time).

4LP Box Set and 3CD versions available now

Public Service Broadcasting release The Last Flight this week. In the words of the band this album 'is our version of the story of Amelia Earhart's final, ill-fated journey in 1937. Having successfully navigated over 20,000 miles and 5 continents on her round-the-world trip, her aircraft, the Electra, vanished without trace near Howland Island. Her whereabouts, and those of her navigator, Fred Noonan, remain a lingering mystery to this day.

Rather than focus exclusively on the flight itself, the record is as much an examination of Earhart's remarkable character. She was an extremely rare blend of grace, composure, technical aptitude and a fortitude that the rest of us mere mortals can barely dream of, all enveloped by the soul of a poet.'

'Seun Kuti releases highly anticipated album Heavier Yet (Lays The Crownless Head) featuring guests Damian Marley and Sampa The Great.

Afrobeat virtuoso Seun Kuti gears up to unleash his latest musical masterpiece upon the world. Coming 6 years after the Grammy nominated album Black Times, this album marks a pivotal moment in Seun Kuti's illustrious career, showcasing his evolution as an artist and activist.'

Vinyl & CD versions available now

'First time on vinyl for Everything and Nothing David Sylvian’s 29-track career-spanning compilation from 2000. Features key songs from Japan and Rain Tree Crow, as well as David’s Virgin Records solo years. Also includes key collaborations with Ryuichi Sakamoto, Robert Fripp and Alesini and Andreoni.'

3LP version available now

'Weval (Harm Coolen and Merijn Scholte Albers) are an Amsterdam-based duo who have established a solid reputation across the globe for crafting highly textured and sophisticated electronic music. Night Versions are brand new, club-focused alternatives to key tracks from Weval’s recent critically acclaimed album, Remember.'

12" vinyl available now

'Fat Dog are the most exciting breakthrough band of the past few years, conjurers of the sort of frenzied and wild live shows not seen in the capital for years and now the creators of WOOF., a brilliant and mind-bending debut album. A thrilling blend of electro-punk, rock’n’roll snarling, techno soundscapes, industrial-pop and rave euphoria, WOOF. is music for letting go to or, in the words of frontman Joe Love, “screaming-into-a-pillow music”.
